If you are using a different range of paints look at the image below that shows the colours and their numbers. You can use this to choose alternative colours that are similar.

Base Colour

Step 1

Mix equal parts 63 and 94 and apply over the entire horse.

Water your paints down and do thin layers until you cannot see any white (or alternatively use an airbrush)

Step 2

Use equal parts 60 and 160 to darken the coat. Leave areas around the muzzle, stifle and point of elbow lighter. Use real horse reference to get an idea of how the colour should look.

Step 3

Mix 70% 10, 10% 60, 10% 63 and 10% 85.

Apply over the neck, face, back, shoulder, chest and legs. Apply a few more layers to the legs and around the eyes and muzzle to darken.

Step 4

Apply 85 to the legs, muzzle and groin area.

It's a good idea at this point to add a layer of sealant before you start handling the model loads for the detail

Step 5

Apply 85 to the main and tail. If you've been using an airbrush up until now use paint brushes. You do not need to thin the paint down for these layers.

The Details

Step 6

Add any white markings using 22.

Step 7

Apply some 22 mixed with a small amount of 60 to the eyes.

Step 8

Create an iris using 10, leave some eye whites in the corners.

Step 9

Paint an oblong shaped pupil using 85

Step 10

For darker coloured hooves use 129 first.

Step 11

Then add 27 leaving a small line of the lighter grey showing at the top

Step 12

For lighter hooves (where you have a white marking) use 237.

Step 13

Seal your horse and then add a layer of clear gloss to teh hooves, eyes and muzzle. He is now complete!
