Brown

The following tutorial was written in 2011.

The model used is a Breyer Stablemate G3 Warmblood.

This tutorial was completed using airbrushed acrylics, hand painted acrylics and pastels. It is perfectly possible to complete this without the use of an airbrush. It is assumed you are painting a Stablemate model horse but this tutorial will work for all scales.

Base Colour

Step 1

Cover the entire horse in a coat of ochre.

Step 2

Start to form the dapples using an old paint brush (that is clumped up that has a stubby end, you could also use a silicone brush). Create little circles all over the barrel and up the neck of the horse.

Step 3

Cover the horse in a layer of chocolate brown, leaving the nose, bottom of the legs, mane and tail. You should be able to see the darker dapple marks slightly through the paint.

Step 4

Add emphasis to your dapples with ochre pastel. Add a layer of ochre pastel to the bottom of the legs, muzzle and around the eyes.

Seal your model with a good quality sealant.

Step 5

Paint the mane and tail with a layer of dark brown.

Finishing Your Model

You can finish off your model by adding any white markings you wish to add.

Paint the eyes, hooves and other details. Smooth off any edges using pastels before giving your model a final seal. Then add gloss to the hooves, eyes and nostrils.
