This tutorial was completed using hand painted acrylics (Citadel range) and pastels. For the price estimate it is assumed you are using hand painted acrylics or pastels. It is assumed you are painting a Stablemate model horse but this tutorial will work for all scales.

The Base Colour

Step 1

You need to start with a white base coat as this will show through on the final colour. If you have prepped in grey use a coat of white primer on top.

Step 2

Use reference for the markings. Start with a coat of light ochre and map out the dark patches on your model.

Step 3

Paint over the markings with a red brown, leaving lighter patches around the stifle and inside of the markings.

Step 4

Now add a coat of dark brown, leave some contrast in the coat so that the lighter colours show through.

Step 5

Use a light coloured pastel to add highlights to the stifle.

Step 5

Use a black pastel to add shading to the ears, muzzle and genitals (if darker in colour). Also add some shading to the outside of the markings.

Step 6

Use black pastel to add shading to the tail. Paint any mane that meets the bay markings black.

Step 7

Add pink (or a very light orange will also work) pastel to the muzzle where the white markings are.

Finishing Your Piece

Finish your piece by painting the details such as the eyes and hooves. If you want to take it a step further use a white pastel pencil to add mapping to the markings.
Seal and sign your model before glossing the eyes and hooves.
